Dozens Of Neglected Horses Rescued From Nevada County Property

NEVADA COUNTY (CBS13) — More than 40 horses were found neglected with signs of malnourishment on a Nevada County property on Wednesday.

The Nevada County Sheriff's Department got help from dozens of people to get the wild horses found on a Swenson Avenue property away from danger.

A 1,200-pound wild horse doesn't go easily. Now try getting 41 of them to do what you want.

"You're dealing with a large animal and not get yourself hurt or them," volunteer Claudia Booth said.

What at times looked like a picturesque scene in the foothills was actually a dangerous situation for the horses who deputies say were being neglected.

"Some of them have exhibited obvious signs of malnutrition, we have been feeding these horses for a little over a week now," said Sgt. Sam Brown.

The property owner originally agreed to let his tenant house six horses there for a friend. That friend, who is essentially a horse hoarder, told police he couldn't take care of them on his own. It was too expensive.

Police got permission to take the horses to a nearby sanctuary, and enlisted the help of a small caravan of volunteers and their trailers.

It was slow going to say the least when it came to corralling and coaxing the horses into trailers.

Nevada Animal Control says it's too early to tell if the owner will face charges for neglect, but they're just happy they caught wind of the wild horses and got them to safety before starvation lead to death.
