Fifty Shades Of Grey Has Sex Shops, Conventional Retailers Seeking To Tie Up New Market

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — "Fifty Shades of Grey" is set to hit theaters on Valentine's Day weekend, which means a wave of curious customers are walking into adult toy stories.

Mr. Grey isn't just exciting couples across the country. Adult store owners saw money signs after the trilogy came out a few years ago. So now stores like Target are turning to the sex toy industry too.

From the book to the bedroom, the series has sex shops like the G Spot in Sacramento gearing up for what's bound to happen after the movie comes out—a spike in toy sales.

"Made it OK, made it where it's not something to be ashamed of," said Larry Smith-Waller.

Since the book's release, he says titillating talk is becoming less taboo among all ages.

"Anyone from a young adult to a grandma," he said. "We've had grandmas come in here, and good for them."

But you don't need to go to a sex shop to buy adult toys anymore. Now stores like Albertson's and Target are selling 50 Shades of Grey merchandise in the medicine aisle.

While some don't agree Mr. Grey is exactly a romantic remedy, Larry says it's definitely created conversation.

"Depending on who you are it could be offensive but it was also very erotic," said Rhonda Pate, who read the books.
