134 mph Wind Gust Closes Ski Resorts Around Lake Tahoe, Snaps Trees, Downs Power Lines
RENO, Nev. (AP) - A powerful Sierra storm packing hurricane-force winds has left more than 20,000 people without power along the range's eastern front stretching about 100 miles from south of Carson City to north of Reno.
Winds gusting up to 134 mph over ridge tops early Friday closed ski resorts around Lake Tahoe, snapped dozens of trees more than 2 feet-thick, downed power lines and sparked a series of small brush fires.
There were no immediate reports of injuries, but numerous reports of property damage, mostly broken windows, bent garage doors and flying roof shingles.
An outbuilding was split in half by a 2-foot thick pine that was uprooted about 60 miles northwest of Reno in Graeagle, California.
Two trucks were reported to have overturned on a highway near there between Susanville and Janesville.
More than 13,000 power outages were reported around Reno and Carson City, and as many as 10,000 in Susanville.
