Auburn's Annexation Plans Have Placer County Leery Of Losing North Auburn

AUBURN (CBS13) — The City of Auburn has its eyes on a possible annexation of North Auburn that could lead to them butting heads with Placer County.

City Councilman Daniel Berlant says taking over the area could help streamline services for both the city and county.

"This isn't a land grab, this is really about making sure we're an efficient government in the Auburn area," he said.

But why would the city want to grow by more than 10,000 residents when they've had publicized financial issues? The Highway 49 corridor has been a huge economic driver for the tax base of Placer County.

Berlant says instead, the taxes from major retailers like Home Depot, Target and Best Buy would head to the city, keeping that money closer to where it's being generated.

Jon Scofield with the Placer County Deputy Sheriff's Association isn't sure whether the city will improve the services that he and his colleagues already provide.

"We want to give the best service to the citizens of North Auburn, and we believe we give that to them," he said.

He's also worried about their jobs.

"I think its safe to say if the annexation were to occur, the positions might be in jeopardy in the future," he said.
