Fatal Isleton Shooting Was Over Family Dispute, Neighbor Says

ISLETON (CBS13) - We're learning more about the 79-year-old Isleton man who, investigators say, was shot and killed by his friend over the weekend.

According to neighbors, the victim and suspect knew each other very well. They were always friendly with one another, so it comes as a complete shock to them something like this would happen.

The crime tape is down, and we're getting our first look at where a neighbor dispute turned deadly Sunday afternoon. Neighbor's say 79-year-old Hallie Beaver, who also goes by Toby, was shot and killed in this trailer.

"This whole circumstance is about a father loving his son and trying to help him out after some trouble," said Ken Tucker, a family friend.

Tucker says it all started when Toby noticed his son's face was bruised. He says Toby's son said Jeremy had something to do with it. Toby went to Jeremy's home to talk to him and that's when Tucker says, Toby was shot.

"Went to have a talk with him is all and the guy shot him," said Tucker.

Jeremy was picked up and released this morning, say deputies. We stopped by his house and knocked on his door, but no one answered.

Deputies say there may not be enough evidence to arrest Jeremy, or it could have been a case of self-defense. Friends and neighbors say the two men got along. Toby would let Jeremy's kids use his dock to fish from.

Now Toby is dead and his longtime wife, Leona, is a widow.

"They were high school sweethearts, married 56 years," said Tucker.

Sheriff's deputies say the case has been turned over to the district attorney's office for review. A decision will be made if the suspected shooter will be prosecuted.
