Placer Sheriff Warns Against Climbing 730 Feet For Dangerous Bridge Selfies

AUBURN (CBS13) — More than 30 people were busted over the weekend in what's becoming a dangerous trend—scaling the Foresthill Bridge to take selfies.

The Placer County Sheriff's Department says the problem has gotten so bad, they are going to start doing extra patrols to watch out for daredevils.

Sheriff's officials say they are busting more and more people hopping fences to post a moment of glory online. They think sharing the photos on Instagram is actually attracting others to do the same.

Conner Wickham came to explore the bridge on Tuesday after seeing a friend post a picture.

"I've seen some of the pictures, people way out there, I'd personally never consider it," he said. "But I definitely see the appeal. That's for sure"

Sheriff's spokeswoman Dena Irwin says the added patrols are meant to curb a dangerous trend.

"What people need to understand is there is zero chance for survival; it's 730 feet," she said. "The wind just funnels through here, it's extremely dangerous, there is nothing about being under that bridge which is safe."

The county public works department is also looking at better ways to secure the bridge, including barbed wire where there is easy entry.

The Foresthill Bridge is the highest bridge in California and fourth-highest in the US.
