13-Year-Old Stockton Teen's Death May Be Gang-Related

STOCKTON (CBS13) — A 13-year-old boy was gunned down in Stockton on Monday as family members say he was walking to school.

Stockton Police say the deadly shooting may be gang-related, and the city is trying to step up its efforts to stop similar violence.

The city estimates 80 percent of all crime in the city has some kind of gang-affiliation, and the city's newly established Office of Violence Prevention exists to stop these kinds of tragedies.

Monday's shooting left family members huddled in prayer on a Stockton street corner where the boy they affectionately called "Ray Ray" was gunned down on his walk to school.

Police say the shooting's location is known for gang activity. Gang detectives arrived to investigate the motive behind another senseless shooting in a city that's suffered through too many.

Stockton Police's gang enforcement unit works daily to dismantle the gangs causing the violence. It partners with several dozen agencies at the federal, state and local levels to round up violent gang members,

The department is seeing change for the betters, but gradually. It's a daily battle, and it's far from over.

Police don't have any suspects in custody and have not released a description. But investigators say they have interviewed several potential witnesses.
