Who Is Creating Peepholes In Men's Restrooms At American River College?

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — American River College officials are hoping students can help them nab whoever is behind several mysterious peepholes in men's bathrooms on campus.

Students at American River College are on edge after peepholes have been popping up throughout campus men's rooms.

"It's very invasive because of the positioning, right where uh—it's a very private area for people," said student Erol Morkoc.

Custodial supervisor Preston Harris says the holes are made through the walls of bathroom stalls and it's been an off and on issue for at least the last decade.

"This semester it's been a little bit more rampant than before," he said.

A team of custodians patrol the restrooms several times a day, and if a hole is found, it's covered with a piece of metal and screws, he said.

"It's as effective as we can get for now, in terms of immediately providing for the privacy of the students, faculty and staff," he said.

At this point, officials don't know if the peepholes are being used to spy on other students, because no one has ever been caught in the act.

College spokesman Scott Crow says surveillance cameras aren't an option.

"There are some limitations on what anybody can do in a bathroom facility because of law," he said.

But Morkoc says students want a more permanent solution.

"That seems like an acceptance of the situation as it is. its not a prevention, its just a literal stop gap. What's going to prevent that from continuing?"

The college says it's looking to replace some of the stalls with a less permeable material.
