CARMICHAEL (CBS13) - Deputies are involved in a standoff in Carmichael with a man suspected of shooting a woman and then firing at deputies.

The standoff is unfolding at a home near the corner of Madison and Manzanita avenues where the suspect, a man, remains barricaded inside of the home.

It started around 9:30 a.m.  Several witnesses say they heard multiple gunshots and saw a woman bleeding from gunshots wounds. When deputies arrived at a duplex at 6026 Madison Avenue, they found a woman on the ground in front of the home with gunshot wounds to the neck and stomach, according to reports.

A suspect who was in front of the home reportedly ran around to the back of the home, and a short time later, shots were fired in the deputies' direction from inside the home. None of the deputies were hit.

The woman was taken to the hospital by a deputy. She is still alive, but has life-threatening injuries.

A man who lives near the home says he driving in his car when was also shot at. His wife and baby were home at the time. When he got out of his car, he yelled to his wife to run for safety.

"I thought I was going to die," said Jeff.

"It was like, so fast that you can't think. I have him screaming 'grab the baby and run'," said Josh's wife, Megan. "I didn't have time to think. I seen him running out of the car and didn't know what was going on."

Deputies reportedly have intermittent in contact with the suspect, who continues to shoot at deputies. So far, he has fired at them four times, says Sacramento County Sheriff's spokesperson Sgt. Bowman.

Other people, including a postal worker, reportedly helped the victim get to safety. They were reportedly also fired at by the suspect.

Deputies say the man briefly called dispatch and then hung up.

Nearby homes have been evacuated.

People are urged to stay away from the 6000 block of Madison Avenue near Manzanita Avenue. Madison Avenue is blocked off to Schuyler Drive.

Charles Peck Elementary School, which is on nearby Rutland Drive, remains under a shelter-in-place order.

According to San Juan Unified School District communication coordinator Kim Minugh, all students at Charles Peck Elementary will be "released at the regular dismissal time of 3:10 p.m. using a 'secure checkout' process."  That means anyone who wants to pick up a student from campus must present a valid I.D. and must be in the student's emergency card.
