Midwest Bird Flu May Move Sacramento Egg Prices Higher

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The country's largest bird flu outbreak in 30 years has Sacramento grocers concerned about the price of eggs.

The nation's leading egg producer, Iowa, has lost 26 million hens to the deadly disease. It's driven up Midwest egg prices 17 percent since mid-April.

Troy Derfee, the assistant manager at Taylor's Market in Sacramento says the bird flu is not impacting customers at his register, but he's concerned California farmers may soon be asked to meet egg demands in the Midwest.

"It just depends. If somebody needs some eggs out there and they may have to buy from somewhere else and somebody maybe short. It just depends," he said.
