Chandra Levy: Man Convicted Of Killing Modesto Native Granted New Trial

Editor's Note: A previous version of the story incorrectly stated Levy had been an intern for Condit.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The man convicted of killing Chandra Levy has been granted a new trial.

Levy was an intern for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington when she was murdered. She and former local congressman Gary Condit were having an affair prior to the story that made national headlines.

Ingar Guandique was convicted of killing Levy in 2010.

Purple and green ribbons line the family home of Chandra Levy, more than a decade after her disappearance and murder captured national headlines.

"I had a hunch that this was going to happen," her mother Susan Levy said.

After being sentenced to 60 years in prison, Guandique's attorneys argue a key witness in his 2010 trial lied, and state prosecutors have withdrawn their long-standing opposition.

I can't say that I have total doubts, I will say my husband is 100% sure that the right man is behind bars," Susan Levy said.

Rep. Condit was ruled out as a suspect.

While Levy's mother says she's grateful her daughter's body was found in Washington, D.C. park, she doesn't anticipate attending much of Guandique's trial.

"Whatever the evidence is, I don't have my daughter," she said.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for next week, however prosecutors are trying to push it back by two weeks.
