CHP: Teen Suspect In Deadly Hit And Run May Have Only Been Ticketed

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A high school senior accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian and driving away, is six days away from graduating. But instead of walking with her class, she will walk into a courtroom, charged with a felony.

A neighbor who leaves near the teenage suspect, Sabina Carillo, says she saw things that didn't make sense at first. But after news of the hit-and-run crash she became suspicious.

"We know that the police are out there quite a bit," said CHP spokesperson Chad Hertzell.

Jenelle Kates lives across the street from 18-year-old Carrillo.

Carillo was arrested Thursday in connection with the deadly accident on Wednesday morning that killed 54-year-old Stephen Vuletich. Authorities say he was jaywalking.

"A vehicle was traveling on Marconi hit him. Instead of stopping, [it] took off," said Hertzell.

Police tracked Carrillo's car to a home on Humbolt Way where she lives with her family. Investigators learned she had gone to work in Folsom. She later turned herself in.

Authorities say they are now looking into other arrests in connection with this case. Another neighbor who didn't want to be identified told CBS13 they saw Carillo's father hosing down the front end of the car and then put a car cover over it. That neighbor also said the license plate had been removed.

Carillo was released this morning on a $150,000 bond.

"She's not talking to us, so we can't get a statement from her. But we're going off witness testimony, what witness statements were with their conversation with her and the video surveillance," said Hertzell.

That video comes from a nearby RT bus and street cameras.

Authorities say Carillo, who was set to graduate shortly from an area continuation high school, made a big mistake when she chose to leave the scene.

"If she would've stuck around she would not be charged. She would've walked away without a ticket, without anything," said Hertzell.

CHP says Carrillo is not being charged with manslaughter or murder because there was no intent. But they say the can and will add those charges later if there's evidence.
