Model Claims She Lost Her Leg From Toxic Shock Syndrome Due To Tampon

SACRAMENTO (CBS Sacramento) - A model is suing Kotex claiming she got Toxic Shock Syndrome that caused her to have her leg amputated after using the Kotex Natural Balance Tampon.

According to WebMD, Toxic Shock Syndrome affects women that wear super-absorbent tampons during their menstrual cycle.

Lauren Wasser, a California model and athlete, told People that TSS caused her to be rushed to the hospital with a 107-degree fever, which later resulted in below-the-knee amputation to her right leg.

"I wanted to kill myself when I got home. All of a sudden I don't have a leg, I'm in a wheelchair, I have half a foot, I can't even walk to the bathroom," Wasser said. "I'm in a bed, I can't move, and I felt like those four walls were my prison."

Wasser explained she changed her tampon three times that day. She is now suing the manufacturer and wants to help educate woman on potential risks of using tampons.

"Had I known all the info about TSS, I would never have used tampons," she told People.

Wasser still finds it hard every day to feel beautiful and trying to find herself worthy.

A company spokesperson told People they do not comment regarding ongoing litigation.
