Firefighter Injured Battling Nevada County Fire Remains In Hospital

NEVADA COUNTY (CBS13) - Four firefighters who were battling the Lowell Fire in Nevada County are recovering from burns they suffered over the weekend.

Three of the firefighters have been released, while one firefighter is still at UC Davis Medical Center with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

One Cal Fire firefighter was returned to full duty, while the second will resume regular duties over the next week. Both firefighters are from Cal Fire's Mendocino unit, according to Cal Fire agency spokesperson Daniel Berlant.

The firefighters were all on Chicago Park Powerhouse Road on Sunday at 5 p.m. when the fire overran them.

Two of the injured firefighters work for Cal Fire, and the other two, including the one with more serious burns, work for the U.S. Forest Service.

The Lowell Fire has burned 1,700 acres and is 20 percent contained. It is threatening 1,800 homes in Nevada and Placer Counties.

Mandatory Evacuations remain in place for Red Dog Road East of Greenhorn Creek, You Bet Road East of Greenhorn Creek, Chalk Bluff and Lowell Hill Roads. An evacuation advisory is also in place for the Cascade Shores Community.

An evacuation center has been opened at the Nevada Union High School, located at 11671 Ridge Road in Grass Valley.

Road closures are in place at SR-20 at Lowell Hill; I-80 at Dutch Flat Exit 139; I-80 at Secret Town Exit 149
Chicago Park at Powerhouse Road; Diggins at Alta and Mando Rd. between Pasquale and Banner.
