American Cancer Society Says California Is Lagging In Tobacco-Use Cancer Prevention
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — New numbers are revealing shortfalls in California's efforts to prevent cancer, and one group says lawmakers are part of the problem.
The American Cancer Society tells CBS13 when it comes to breast cancer legislation, the state gets a passing mark, but that's not the case with tobacco products.
Tim Gibbs with the Cancer Action Network, a lobbying arm of the ACS, says newly released data shows the state is missing the mark when it comes to tobacco use legislation and prevention programs.
"It's matter of the political power the tobacco companies have," he said.
Gibbs says deep-pocketed tobacco companies are causing important legislative efforts to go up in smoke, including influencing California's smoke-free environment laws and tobacco tax rates.
