By Kelly Ryan

RANCHO CORDOVA (CBS13) — Rancho Cordova is stepping up its effort to curb crime with a crime-suppression unit residents voted to pay for in November.

Police officer Lawrence Stafford is one of four officers that make up the new Rancho Cordova crime suppression unit.

"People want to feel safe and it's getting to the point where people are voicing it more and more they want crime suppression guns off the street," he said.

The unit is paid for by Rancho Cordova residents who passed Measure H last November agreeing to a half-cent sales tax and hoping for some increased crime-fighting measures.

"The crime suppression unit will be focusing on high crime neighborhoods gang members parole members registered sex offenders," said Chief Michael Goold.

In just its second week the unit has already confiscated drugs and guns.

"Last week they took several guns off the street made several felony arrest including individuals with drugs for sale," he said.

Many residents say the new crime suppression unit will be a good partner with law abiding citizens, Specifically targeting high crime areas and keeping criminals out of their community.

"A lot of us in the community are interested because you want to live in an area that's friendly and not worry about high crime," said resident Tina Gonzalez.
