Championship-Winning Blind Archer, Husband Taking Teamwork To The Next Level

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - She has a gold medal in the sport of archery, but she doesn't use her sight to hit the bullseye. She uses her sense of touch.

It is hard enough to hit the bullseye with a bow and arrow from 20 yards away, but Janice Walth can do it without ever seeing the target. She is taking aim at dispelling the myth that a blind person can't hit her mark.

"I'm totally blind and have a little bit of light perception out the sides, but that's it," said Janice.

She uses a specially designed tripod that helps her feel where to aim, rather than see.

"I touch the back of my hand in the same place between my second and third knuckle," she said. "I know it when I feel it."

Her coach and husband, Courtney, acts as her eyes.

"He tells me the color ring where I hit and the clock face, so that gives me an idea of how I'm doing and if I need to adjust," she said.

"Visual people take sight for granted and they allow all the adjustments to go with their eyesight. Where visually impaired, you don't have that ability," said Courtney.

Janice set her sights on archery 12 years ago.

"I decided to see what it was like to shoot a bow, what's it like to feel the shot, hear it hit the target," she said.

Now her skills are so sharp she was invited to the World Archery Para Championships in Germany last week where she took home the gold.

"I have been fortunate to take it to this level. [I] never considered that when I started shooting with him that I would go to the world championships," she said.

Taking top honors proves even though she's blind, Janice sees no limits.

"It gives you this feeling like wow, I can do archery and I can be competitive and I can have fun with it. What are the other things in my life I thought I couldn't do, and maybe I can," she said.

Courtney and Janice are now working to inspire other visually impaired people to take up the sport of archery.

Janice has competed in two other World Para Championships where she took home silver and bronze medals.
