Surveillance Video Shows Moments Before Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting In Modesto

MODESTO (CBS13) — Surveillance video inside a gas station shows the frightening moments when Modesto Police say an armed man burst inside to rob the place.

The gunman was confronted and fatally shot by a police officer on Saturday morning, who happened to be getting gas at the end of his shift.

The man has been identified as Gino Paredes, 22, a Modesto man on active parole. He was recently serving time for burglary, but was released early because of Proposition 47. The measure reduced certain nonviolent property and drug crimes from a felony to a misdemeanor.

Surveillance video shows the gunman dressed in all black, rushing in and waving a weapon while shoving two customers to the side. Police said on Tuesday the weapon was an airsoft gun painted black, something that would appear to be an actual gun.

A witness in the parking lot started recording as the alleged robber ran out to find a waiting police officer.

Reggie Kumar says he can't believe the gunman didn't see the officer.

"There's cops here all the time," he said. It seems like they always stop here at their shift, fill gas all the time, so it's kinda weird he didn't see it, because they're always here."

Backup arrived almost immediately. The video doesn't show the moment the officer opened fire, shooting and killing the suspect.

A witness who didn't want to be identified questions whether police should have pulled the trigger, saying it appeared Paredes was dropping the gun when he was shot.

Mike Callahan, a 17-year veteran with the Modesto Police Department, has been placed on paid administrative leave.
