Roseville Charter School Warned About Sexually Violent Predator Moving In Nearby

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) — A Roseville charter school is stepping up security as a sexually violent predator is moving in nearby.

There wasn't a single parent at John Adams Academy who hadn't heard what was going on. According to the Megan's Law website, he's only the third offender classified as a sexually violent predator living in Roseville.

Bryan Cook's arrival is attracting a lot of attention. School leaders distributed his photo and notified parents in an email and increased patrols on campus.

"I was grateful for the school's communication and I know our school is vigilant about things like this," said parent Emily Mountfound.

Roseville Police gave the school a head's up that Cook was moving in nearby.

"What we understand from the police department based on the individual's history and what his registration is, they wanted to make sure we were aware as a school," said dean of operations Norman Gonzales.

According to corrections officials, Cook spent time behind bars on multiple counts of lewd and lascivious acts on a child under 14.

Parents like Chrystal Saechao were grateful for the school's immediate action.

"Actually my dad's an ex-correctional officer, so I've heard horror stories and everything else," she said. "That's why I'm super diligent and careful, and why I decided to put her in this school."

For now, Cook is living at a nearby hotel on Harding Boulevard. When CBS13 went to the office, Cook himself was inside. He didn't want to go on camera, but the 75-year-old said he was recently released from a state hospital.

Cook says he made a mistake in 1986 and deserved to go to prison, but says he's served his time, made amends, gone through intensive therapy and "no longer feels those urges."

Roseville Police says Cook immediately registered with them as required by law. It's their understanding that his stay at the hotel is temporary until he finds a permanent place to live.

It's not clear how long his stay will be, or if he wants to stay in Roseville permanently.
