Florin High Brawl That Injured Principal Has Parents Concerned

ELK GROVE (CBS13) — Parents are looking for answers after video shows a principal slammed to the ground while trying to break up a fight at Florin High School.

Security was tight on the campus on Thursday with deputies seen throughout the day. Students say fights aren't uncommon.

The video of the brawl that led to Principal Don Ross being thrown down by a student has parents wondering about the safety of their children.

School security expert and former Sacramento City Schools police chief Vince Matranga says the video shows a principal trying to do the right thing, but wonders where the other adults are.

"Principals are supposed to break up fight, that's part of their job," he said. "It did bother me that I did not see an adult come right into the picture frame and try and help the principal."

The incident may highlight a need for more supervision, he said, as well as a need to address what could be a growing unrest at the school.

"If there is a lot of violence at a school, certainly it needs to be addressed, you need to bring in all the stakeholders, the staff, the students of course, and the parents, as well," he said.

The district held a meeting on Thursday with parents.

It's not the first time a staff member was assaulted at a Sacramento-area high school. Cellphone video captured a fight at Grant Union High School in Sacramento where a teacher trying to break it up took a punch to the head.

In the Florin High case, school resource deputies came in and arrested the two students involved.
