Stockton Neighborhood On Edge After 50 Bullets Fired Into Home, Hitting Mom Sleeping With Child

STOCKTON (CBS13) — Uneasiness and uncertainty are on the streets of one Stockton neighborhood after more than 50 shots were fired into a home, hitting a mother sleeping with her 2-year-old daughter.  Police say the mother was transported to an area hospital and was listed in stable condition.

Bullet holes are everywhere from the walls to the windows to a nearby car. Neighbors say the gunfire made them jump out of bed to see what was going on. Now they're worried the shooter could come back.

"My car alarm was going off and I figured it had to be, definitely right in front of my house," Carlos said. "The first thing that came into my head when I heard all of the gunfire was the safety of my children. And I didn't even want to come outside."

Carlos didn't want us to show his face, but he wants to make sure the shooter who fired dozens of rounds into his neighbor's home is found.

"I'm definitely going to be on the edge of my bed, you know, wondering are my kids safe for the night," he said.

Stockton Police say a 22-year-old woman was shot at least once while she was sleeping with her 2-year-old daughter inside. Three other people were inside the home at the time, but nobody else was hurt.

"Definitely that house or someone inside that house was a target," spokesman Joe Silva said. "And we want to know why."

The bedrooms where Arnie Hurtado's sons sleep is a stone's throw away from the shooting.

"I went and touched them to make sure they were fine," he said. "I don't want that for my kids, so. It is scary."

Investigators say they don't have any suspect descriptions to go on.

Carlos says he's making some changes in case the shooter comes back.

"We're trying to sleep in the very back of the house now. But the thing is, I fixed our lighting system in the front of our house now, and I'm thinking about installing security cameras," he said.

Witnesses reported seeing two cars speeding from the scene—a tan Acura and a black Honda Civic.

Editor's note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the victim had died.
