Four Dogs, Cat Killed In Fire At West Sacramento Home

WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A devastating fire tore through a West Sacramento home and killed a family's pets.

The scene was along the 2100 block of Manchester Street. Firefighters were called to the scene just after 3 p.m. Sunday and found a heavy fire at the house. Much of the house was in flames by the time firefighters got to the house.

"About two minutes, the only time we had to get out," said Susan Chapman, who escaped along with her family.

Flames spread through about half of the house, and three rooms suffered heavy fire damage.

Firefighters say the family got out safely, but four dogs and one cat died in the fire.

"I just called all their names and they didn't come. I couldn't go in 'cause there [was] too much smoke in there," Chapman said.

Investigators believe a cigarette may have started the fire. Chapman says she was in the kitchen when the fire broke out.

"I seen smoke coming out of the garage, went out there [and] the couch was on fire," Chapman said. "I got some water and tried to put it out."

The Red Cross currently is helping the family, but Chapman says her family is now facing much uncertainty.

"I have no idea. No clue."
