Prosecutors Eye Death Penalty For Central California Mother Charged With Murder

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities say a Central California woman charged with murdering her daughter and torturing her son could face the death penalty.

The Fresno Bee reports that Madera County District Attorney David Linn says the woman's husband is also facing charges related to the death and cover up.

Amy Chavoya of Madera Ranchos is murdering her 12-year-old daughter Mariah Flores. She is also charged with torturing Mariah and two of her siblings.

Her husband, Gerardo Flores, is on administrative leave from his job as a San Juan County sheriff's deputy. Linn says Flores will be charged with several felonies.

Linn says Chavoya's net court date is Dec. 30.

Chavoya was arrested in November. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
