Sacramento State's Ryan Coogler Selected To Direct Marvel's 'Black Panther'

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A Sacramento State graduate will be taking the reins of a Marvel movie.

The studio announced Ryan Coogler was picked as the director for Marvel's "Black Panther," which is due to come out in 2018.

Coogler's been on the rise since the critically acclaimed "Fruitvale Station," which told the story of the shooting of Oscar Grant by a Bay Area Rapid Transit officer in 2009. His most recent movie, "Creed," is a sequel of sorts to the "Rocky" series and features Sylvester Stallone as the heavyweight champ-turned-trainer for the son of Apollo Creed.

"Black Panther" will bring the story of T'Challa, the leader of the fictional technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chadwick Boseman will take on the title role.

The 2018 movie won't be the first time Black Panther will be on the big screen. After mentions of Wakanda in "Avengers: Age Of Ultron," the character will play a role in "Captain America: Civil War," due out on May 6 this year.
