The NFL Introduces Rooney Rule For Women
The NFL gets a lot of flak. A LOT! Most of it is fair considering everything that has happened over the last few years but now the NFL is introducing the Rooney Rule for women according to Richard Deitch of Sports Illustrated.
The Rooney Rule is a rule that says, before any head coach is named teams need to interview at least one minority. It doesn't say you have to hire x amount or anything like that, just an interview. Whatever you think of the rule it's at least helped with the hiring of coaches such as Mike Tomlin, Ron Rivera and Hue Jackson.
Now, with this new rule, it does the same thing for women regarding executive league office positions.
This ruling comes after the Buffalo Bills promoted Kathryn Smith to special teams quality control coach. This made her the first full-time female coach in NFL history. This also comes after the NFL named their chief marketing offer in 2014 after a successful campaign with PepsiCo.
Football analyst for CBS Sports, Amy Trask, thinks that this should be called the Al Davis rule. Trask was the CEO of the Raiders from 1997-2013.
Whenever this rule is officially introduced it will, at the very least, be something that ushers in the chance to give women an equal shot of getting jobs in the NFL. If this can do for women what the Rooney Rule did for minorities then you have to give this a shot.
