Yolo County Zika Virus Patient Recovering Well

YOLO COUNTY (CBS13) — A person in Yolo County who returned from a trip abroad has tested positive for the Zika virus, health officials said on Wednesday.

The patient is reportedly doing fine and the case is described as mild.

While 80 percent of people who get the virus don't show symptoms, this patient started to feel it after traveling to a country where the disease is active.

"They came down after experiencing symptoms, a fever a rash after traveling to one of those countries and decided to seek medical help and that's when it was discovered," said Kristin Weivoda

The virus spreads primarily through mosquito bites from two species of mosquitoes that can actively transmit the virus.

"It's very important to note that the mosquitoes that can transmit Zika have not been detected in our area," said Luz Maria Robles with the Mosquito and Vector Control District. "It's very important to note that the mosquitoes that can transmit Zika have not been detected in our area.

Pregnant women are believed to be most at risk for complications because of serious birth defects that have been linked to the virus.

Health officials say while there's no worry about conditions here at home, they want people to stay protected if they travel abroad.
