Sister Saves Young Siblings From Bakersfield House Fire
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) -- Kern County authorities say a quick-thinking 16-year-old girl was able to get her siblings out of their house after her 6-year-old brother started a fire while playing with a lighter.
County fire officials say the 6-year-old ignited a mattress at the home in Bakersfield Monday.
KBAK-TV reports the older sister was alerted to the blaze by smoke alarms. She quickly got her brothers and sisters out of the house before calling 911. Nobody was hurt.
Officials say the fire was contained to a single bedroom, because during the evacuation the bedroom door was closed.
Damages are estimated at around $10,000.
The 6-year-old boy will be required to attend the Juvenile Fire Setter Program with a parent.
