CHP Officer Intentionally Struck In Hit-And-Run, Suspect Arrested In Stolen Construction Truck

5 p.m. UPDATE: A first responder who helped a California Highway Patrol officer at the scene of hit-and-run incident on Thursday says the officer was speaking at the time of the crash.

The firefighter, Sharon McIntyre, arrived on scene and was able to provide care for the injured officer before paramedics arrived.

McIntrye was driving to a training exercise in her personal vehicle when she came on the accident scene. She stopped in the center median to provide aid for the officer and was able to use the officer's radio to alert the CHP that an officer was down.

The CHP recognized her for her heroic efforts at a press conference on Thursday.

3:30 P.M. UPDATE: Caltrans has told CBS13 a vehicle was stolen from the Across the Top project belonging to Bay Cities Paving and Grading, but would not confirm if this vehicle was the suspect was found in later.

CBS13's Steve Large reports the suspect was apprehended in a Bay Cities Paving and Grading truck.

The CHP says it appears the suspect intentionally tried to back over the officer.

The officer's condition is unknown. He has been identified as a North Sacramento California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer.

"It's one of those things where we go out we do our job to protect the public and again if it was a situation where it was a disabled motorist or something on the side of the road in something like this just happens it is very unfortunate. But the community has been wonderful in the situation please just keep the officer and your prayers and hope for a speedy recovery," said CHP officer Tommy Riggin.

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - California Highway Patrol is investigating a hit-and-run accident involving an officer on Interstate 80.

The incident happened just west of Elkhorn Boulevard. All lanes of westbound I-80 at Madison Avenue are shut down due to the investigation, Caltrans says.

A motorcycle officer was involved in the accident. A medical helicopter landed on the freeway to transport the officer to the UC Davis Medical Center.

There has been no word on the condition of the officer.

The suspect was taken into custody in the Fairfield area near Manuel Campos Parkway after a chase, CHP says.

Traffic is backing up on I-80. Expect delays of up to two hours. There is no estimated time of reopening at the moment.
