Spring Storm Spreads Large Hail To Yuba City

YUBA CITY (CBS13) — The wet winter was a boon for farmers, but a spring storm has farmers seeing record hail hammering their fields.

Some of the hailstones measured an inch in diameter, splashing pools, pelleting rooftops and sending people for cover.

But not Dick Dorn. He was in the thick of it collecting the falling ice in a glass bowl.

"This is the biggest hail I've ever seen," he said. "They hit the concrete or they hit the tile up there...phewwww...they just kind of explode like little bombs."

The heavy hail hit his car too, but it's his fields that worried him. His tomatoes, peaches and grapes are just beginning to bud and bloom. They survived this round.

He and other Yuba City farmers are concerned there could be more crop damage if the spring storms continue.

"It's affected the prunes even already so it's going to be a bad season for fruits and vegetables," said Lorrie Callahan.
