'Free Hookers' Sign In Dixon Was Vandalism, Not Prostitution Discount

DIXON (CBS13) — A message board sign was hacked, and instead of seeing a message about construction ahead, drivers saw they something strange.

Typically when you see road signs you see "caution ahead", or something like that, but in Dixon overnight it had most everyone doing a double take.

"When I got closer I said OK that's what I thought it said," said Shelby Crabtree of Dixon.

Crabtree said with Dixon being a small town, of course, everyone saw it.

"I thought it was hilarious and then I showed them all the picture they were like, no way. If I didn't see it I wouldn't have believed it," she said.

Instantly they took to social media and it's been shared now all across the county with running jokes.

"The number to call or where I didn't see any hookers? Or they must have been hiding or something," Crabtree said.

It's vandalism in the 21st century and it's happened before. You may even remember the 'Godzilla attack!' in San Francisco.

While the hackers may have offered up a few laughs, hold that thought, it's not free entertainment.

"If you see them doing [this], call 911 and report them. It's vandalism; we don't want to pay for that," said Deanna Shoopman with Caltrans.

She said they hire independent contractors to put up the message boards, and when this happens, it costs all of us.

"You don't want to waste taxpayers' money to send somebody out to correct it or having to take care of something that should've never happened in the first place. Use your talents elsewhere," she said.

As for Crabtree, she said even though she laughed, it's certainly inappropriate and wouldn't want her children to see it.

If you know what you're doing, hacking into these signs isn't difficult.
