Inmate Shot After California State Prison Stabbing

REPRESA (CBS13) — A stabbing attack carried out by three inmates at California State Prison-Sacramento ended with two inmates being taken to a hospital.

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials say one inmate was stabbed multiple times, and another was shot by a prison officer, and had surgery for his injury.

The fight happened Monday at around 10:30 a.m. at the C-facility yard, which houses maximum-security inmates.

CDCR officials say three inmates began stabbing a fourth inmate with hand-made weapons.

Prison officers tried to break up the fight using one blast dispersion grenade, and one officer shot an inmate with a Mini-14 assault-style rifle.

The inmate who was shot was transported to an outside hospital, and underwent surgery for his injury.

A spokeswoman for the CDCR says the inmate victim who was stabbed suffered from numerous stab wounds.

Both inmates were said to be in fair condition Monday afternoon.

The two additional inmate suspects involved in the stabbing had minor lacerations from the fight and were treated inside the prison.

No officers or additional prison workers were hurt during the fight, and the cause of the fight remains under investigation.

California State Prison-Sacramento has had similar incidents to Monday's attack – in September of 2015, there were multiple stabbings inside the prison involving ten inmates and four correctional officers.

An inmate was also allegedly killed by his cellmate in February.
