Folsom Businesses Worry Amgen Tour Of California Cost Them

FOLSOM (CBS13) — The Amgen Tour of California raced through Folsom on Friday and was expected to pump in millions of dollars to the local economy, but not everyone is benefiting from the economic boost.

Some business owners say the large amount of traffic brought in isn't bringing them a lot of cash.

Just feet away from the fast-moving cyclists were cars slowly pushing through a narrow lane of traffic near Hillswood Drive.

Tony Meyer with Speedy Oil says he and fellow business owners are frustrated. Drivers are not stopping, and it's hard to get customers here.

"It actually slowed us down because of the road closure and all that," he said.

Race organizers say that's not the case through other race locations in the Central Valley. They say the event pumps millions into local economies.

The Bike Closet, a cycling accessory store, is one of ones cashing in. Joe Iannarelli says just like the cycling pros, it's all about positioning.

"The way it's set up it could be a little better for foot traffic, but it's a tough one. It's kind of a no-win any way," he said.

Some entrepreneurs are maximizing the idle time by handing out business flyers to the few who pass by.

But when it comes to the race, Meyer can't wait to see the finish.

"It's neat to see, but for business it's good when it's gone," he said.
