Bernie Sanders Begins Final Push In Davis Before June Primary

DAVIS (CBS13) - More than 9,000 people showed up to hear Sen. Bernie Sanders speak at UC Davis on Wednesday evening. With just 6 days to go until the state's primary, the stop was a part of Sanders' last-minute appeal to California voters.

"We're going to appeal to Californians by working with them to end a corrupt campaign finance system in which billionaires are buying elections," Sanders said.

He spoke on a range of issues including universal health care, income inequality, and college tuition.

"It is time to understand that it cost less to send a young person to the University of California than to send him to jail," Sanders said.

Despite the heat, millennials and baby boomers showed up early to hear Sanders speak so close to home.

"I'm hoping for a change in the political spectrum. And I think he's doing that whether or not he wins," said UC Davis Junior Alex Gruson.

"If we win California and if as I hope and expect we will, it will give us an enormous amount of momentum as we're going to Washington DC and as we go into the democratic convention in Philadelphia," Sanders said.

Next week, six states will head to the polls but with 548 delegates, Sanders has the most on the line in California.

"I think we've got an excellent chance to win if the voter turnout is high," Sanders said. "I hope some of these so called super delegates will figure out who is the strongest candidate and that is Bernie Sanders."
