When It Comes To Fireworks, Please Don't Be Stupid This July 4

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — With Independence Day on the way, the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office is launching a task force to find people using or selling illegal fireworks.

The typical dryness of summer creates a hazard if people decide to use fireworks that launch into the air or explode. State fire officials are driving home the point not to be careless with fireworks this Fourth of July.

"Firefighters respond to hundreds of fires and medical emergencies caused by fireworks," said Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant. "Conditions are very dry and ready to burn and all it takes is a single spark."

State-approved fireworks come with the safe and sane logo on it. Illegal fireworks sold on the streets are considered more dangerous and can cause serious injuries.

Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies will roam the streets looking for violators. Anyone caught in possession of illegal fireworks could spend five days in the county jail, and even more time if they're caught igniting them.

But it's not just about making arrests.

"We don't want people getting hurt. That's the biggest thing. People and property... let's keep them protected," said Sacramento Metro Fire Capt. Michelle Eidam.
