Chaos At The State Capitol: 10 Hurt In Brawl At Rally

SACRAMENTO (CBS 13) – A rally set up by the Traditionalist Worker Party (TWP) was shut down before it even began.

"The Nazis are dangerous and that's why we need to take them on directly," said Yvette Felarca, member of the anti-fascist group By Any Means Necessary  (BAMN).

The State Capitol remained on lockdown chaos as ensued outside. Around 11:45 a.m. Sunday, about 30 members of the TWP arrived for a pre-planned rally on the Capitol steps. But nearly 400 counter protestors were waiting on the lawn were ready to shut down the rally. TWP is known to be a white nationalist group with ties to white supremacists. The counter protestors included people from BAMN.

TWP is known to be a white nationalist group with ties to white supremacists. The counter protestors included people from BAMN.

"These two parties were destined to get into some sort of violent interaction," said California Highway Patrol Officer George Granada.

Ten people were injured in the melee, including counter-protester Felarca.

"Clearly, they are dangerous and we need to keep building this movement," she said.

She said her group had an obligation to take militant action against violent Nazis.

"It's important for anyone who is thinking about joining racist genocide and a racist genocide organization like the Nazi groups that were holding this, that they're not welcome and if they trip and fall in the process, good," Felarca said. "They need to go."

But as the two sides clashed, some outsiders got caught up in the violence. Toby Wenning was forced off of Capitol grounds by counter-protesters calling him a Nazi after recording them with his phone.

"To resort to violence is not the way to do it by any side," he said.

Police have not specified which group suffered more injuries. But anti-fascist group Antifa Sacramento posted this on their Facebook page: "Fascist cowards protected by cops stabbed five of our comrades."

"We shut down the Nazis and in the process of that, you know they attacked us but they were not successful in doing that on balance over all," Felarca said.
