Information About Stolen Guns Could Help Solve Murder Case
EL DORADO COUNTY (CBS13) - The District Attorney's Office released never-before-seen information about items stolen from a murder scene 30 years ago and are asking gun owners to check their collection.
A shotgun, rifles and several pieces of jewelry on June 2, 1986. Deputies said that day Halley Wing was gunned down interrupting an apparent burglary at his son's ranch in Rescue. His wife, Bernice, watched through binoculars as one of those suspects opened fire.
"To watch her still live day after day in that house, reliving what she had seen just took an amazing toll on her," said Wing's granddaughter Marcia Stumpf.
The Wing family has been in El Dorado County for generations. They offered up a $25,000 reward leading the arrest and conviction of the murderer. They also offered $5,000 to the person who returns verified stolen property.
"Somebody knows what happened to that firearm and if somebody can come forward and give us that information, that we can use to try and solve it," said District Attorney Vern Pierson.
"Somebody out there is going to check there safe or their closet and they're going to say, "Oh, this may be the weapon,'" added Chief Robert Cosley, district attorney investigator.
These weapons could be a key piece of evidence to solve this 30-year-old crime.
"I would give up anything, I would sell my house if I had to if it meant to find justice for my grandfather and bring peace for the rest my family," Stumpf said.
