Caltrans Imposes 'Across the Top' Roadway Closures

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has announced plans to close multiple lanes on westbound Interstate 80 in North Sacramento over two consecutive weekends this month, including this coming Saturday and Sunday.

The closures are part of the ongoing $133 million 80 'Across the Top' project, scheduled for completion this fall.

The first set of lane closures will start at 10 p.m. Friday, August 19 and continue through 5 a.m. Monday, August 22. Westbound Interstate 80 will be reduced to two lanes from Longview Drive to Winters Street and will also include the closure of the Longview Drive on-ramp and Winters Street off-ramp to westbound I-80.

Delays of more than 30 minutes are to be expected.

Crews will be doing demolition and pavement construction work. Motorists are encouraged to use Business 80 as an alternate route.

The following weekend, construction crews will shut down "Local Lanes" or the number 3 and 4 lanes access to westbound Interstate 80 just west of Truxel Road. These lanes, will be redirected to Interstate 5. The closures are scheduled from 6 p.m. Friday, August 26 to 5 a.m. Monday, August 29.

The "Express Lane" or far left number 1 will be the only lane open for westbound I-80 to San Francisco until it reopens back to three lanes at the Sacramento River. There will be no access to West El Camino Avenue from westbound I-80.

In addition, the northbound and southbound Interstate 5 freeway ramps that connect to westbound I-80 will be closed as well during the August 26-29 weekend closure.

To reach West El Camino Avenue from I-5, motorists and commercial truckers can use eastbound Arena Boulevard, then head south on El Centro Road to West El Camino Avenue.
