Toddler Dies 2 Days After Being Hit In An LA-Area Crosswalk

HAWTHORNE, Calif. (AP) - Police say a 15-month-old boy was taken off life support and died two days after he was by an SUV in a crosswalk in the Los Angeles area.

Hawthorne police Lt. Ti Goetz tells City News Service the child had been declared brain-dead and taken off life support Monday.

Goetz says a 15-year-old girl was pushing the child in a stroller Saturday when 72-year-old Donna Marie Higgins hit them with her SUV and tried to flee, but witnesses boxed her in with their cars.

Goetz says Higgins was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and felony drunken driving. She has been released on $100,000 bail. She is likely to face stiffer charges now that the child has died.

The teen was injured, but her condition is unclear. The toddler's name hasn't been released.

A phone number listed in Higgins' name rang without an answer.
