Elk Grove Police Chief Misses Out On Top Job In Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Acting Spokane Police Chief Craig Meidl is getting the job permanently.

Spokane Mayor David Condon on Monday selected Meidl over three other candidates to run the police department in the state's second largest city.

He called Meidl the best person and best match for the job.

Earlier this year, Condon picked Meidl as chief even though he didn't apply or participate in the first selection process. The Spokane City Council forced Condon into holding new interviews with the candidates.

The other candidates were Elk Grove, California, Police Chief Robert Lehner; Yakima Police Chief Dominic Rizzi; and Frisco, Texas, Police Chief John Bruce.

Former Chief Frank Straub was pushed out a year ago after a series of problems.
