Sacramento Kings Unveil Controversial Coloring Book Sculpture Outside Golden 1 Center

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The Sacramento Kings officially unveiled an $8 million centerpiece art project at the Golden 1 Center on Monday.

Artist Jeff Koons was on hand as his colorful sculpture Coloring Book was unveiled to the tune of U2's "Beautiful Day" a hit from the year 2000 during the height of the Kings' last successful run.

The sculpture has generated controversy for the high price tag and that it wasn't created by a local artist.

Koons' work is featured at art museums throughout the world, and he's referred to as one of the most important and influential artists of the post-war world.

Coloring Book is an 18-foot sculpture made from a mirror, polished stainless steel and a transparent color coating.

"Coloring Book will never be the same image," Koons said, referring to the way the reflective nature of the piece means its appearance will change based on the weather and surroundings.
