Prop 60: Who's Pushing The Condoms In Porn Films Initiative?

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Proposition 60 is known as the "condoms in pornographic films initiative" and it would do just that: Require the use of condoms and other protective measures during the making of a pornographic movie.

But what else would Prop 60 do?

Prop 60 would also force porn producers to pay for certain health checkups for its actors. It could result in fines for filmmakers who knowingly distribute films where condoms are not used.

While there would be no increase in taxes to cover the enforcement of this proposition, Brian Weatherford with the Legislative Analyst's Office says it could have a financial impact on California's economy.

"If the adult film industry responds by leaving and taking production out of the state, depending on how much economic activity leaves the state, it could be a reduction in tax revenue of several million dollars," Weatherford said.

So who's pushing this prop?

The California Peace and Freedom Party, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and the California Academy of Preventive Medicine.

The "yes" on Prop 60 people have raised more than $4 million compared to $400,000 by those who want it defeated.

California is the leading producer of pornographic films. Most are shot in the Los Angeles area – San Fernando Valley, to be more specific.

There is a similar new rule already in place in the San Fernando Valley, but this prop would make it statewide.
