Man Arrested For DUI After Sheriff's Deputy Hit

SACRAMENTO (CBS13)  - Officers have arrested a man for DUI after a deputy was hit by a vehicle.

Around 9 p.m. Thursday, deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call in the 8200 block of Wildfire Lane in South Sacramento. The caller said the suspect, 24-year-old Edgardo Guerra, was armed with a knife and was trying to stab family members.

Guerra allegedly ran from deputies but was caught a short time later. As he was being escorted on Gerber Road back to the deputy's vehicle, a vehicle hit the deputy. The deputy, whose identity is being withheld, was taken to the hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Following the incident, investigators set up barricades around the scene. Alfonso Pizano, 53, of Sacramento, allegedly drove through those barricades. He was subsequently arrested by officers on suspicion of DUI and was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail. He is scheduled for arraignment on October 31.

The Deputy is an 18-year veteran of the department. He was held overnight for observation and is said to be in good spirits. He is anticipated to be released from the hospital Friday.

The driver who hit the deputy was not cited in the incident.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly reported the suspect had struck the officer.
