October Storm Blankets High Sierra In Snow

SODA SPRINGS (CBS13) – Snow is blanketing Donner Summit Monday morning after a storm rolled through on Sunday.

Vehicles came to a crawl on Interstate 80 Sunday night as drivers spun out of control.

Caltrans says it took just 3 -minutes for six inches of snow to accumulate, and drivers were unprepared for a snowy Sierra.

"I can't tell you how many cars that were stuck in ditches," said Dave Wood with Caltrans. "The occupants get out [in] flip flops, short shorts and tank tops, trying to push their car out of the snow. That's not just realistic."

Chain controls were in effect on all the mountain passes for a time on Sunday. But as of Monday morning, only Highway 88 and Highway 89 still have controls up.
