Breaking: Officer Involved Shooting At Capitol Casino In Sacramento

SACRAMENTO(CBS13)- An off-duty Sacramento Police Officer working as a security guard at Capitol Casino on North 16th St in Sacramento, was involved in a shootout between two groups this morning at 1:37 a. m.

Sacramento Police say, the officer witnessed a fight break out between two groups of people in the parking lot of the Capitol Casino while he was working as a security guard. The officer then went outside to go break it up and was able to separate the two groups. As the parties were leaving, one man pulled out a gun and started firing at the other group with the officer still in between them.

The officer took cover and started returning gunfire to the suspect. A 36-year-old man, who was an innocent bystander, was shot and the officer aided the man. At that moment the suspect fled the scene and is still on the loose.

From investigating the position of the victim to the shootings it is believed the victim was shot by the suspect. He is now in the hospital in critical condition.

Police are taking statements from a large number of witnesses who were in the casino at the time.

There is a lot of damage to the casino from the gunfire but an estimated cost is unknown.

The officer involved in the shooting was unharmed and there are no further reports of injury but the one victim. It is still unknown to officers if the suspect was unharmed.
