Body Of Missing Skier At Mt. Rose Recovered

WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. (CBS13) – The desperate search to find a skier lost in an avalanche near Reno is over.

Rescue crews have recovered a body believed to be a 60-year old missing skier caught in an avalanche.

Sheriff's deputies made the discovery Sunday afternoon.

The missing skier was last seen in the Jackpot Chute area of Mt. Rose Ski Resort.

It's designated strictly for experts, but hadn't been prepared for skiers yet. Investigators say the two skiers ignored closure signs, went around a gate and hiked to the top.

"This was a closed area and the skiers obviously made a decision that they wanted to make a run there and obviously this did not work out for the best," said Bob Harmon with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.

The other skier who escaped the avalanche called for help and made it out safely.

Investigators say the missing skier was not from the Reno-Tahoe area. His name has not been released.
