Best Parades And Celebrations On St. Patrick's Day In Sacramento

St. Patrick's Day is coming, and nearly everyone can find a wee drop of Irish blood in his or her ancestry, at least for that one day. Across Sacramento, there will be pub parties, a parade, green beer, corned beef, colcannon and live music and dance performances, as well as a leprechaun race and photo ops with a special guest donkey.

The Emerald Isle comes to Roseville at The Boxing Donkey's all-day St. Pat's Day celebration. Radio personalities Pat and Tom of KNCI will be broadcasting live from the pub, which will be offering a limited menu of corned beef-laden foods throughout the day. There will be an extended patio and outdoor beer garden featuring a range of Irish brews, ales, ciders and cocktails, and numerous bands will be performing live from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. A cover charge will be in effect all day, and the event is only for those aged 21 and older. No reservations will be taken, so head out early, listen to some bagpipe music and pose for a photo with a real guest donkey.

Don your greenest finery and join the run on this 11th annual event sponsored by Blue Diamond Almonds. The race begins at Raley Field, runs along the iconic Tower Bridge, past the Capitol and back to Raley, with 15 live bands performing along the way. Get some friends to join in; the team with the largest number of registered members will win a donation of $500 for the charity of their choosing. The race supports two charities: Triumph Cancer Foundation and Fleet Feet Sacramento. You must pre-register and spots fill quickly, perhaps due in part to the free beer offered to each adult participant after the race.

Folk music lovers will be overjoyed to spend the evening of St. Patrick's Day with Celtic Grey. The trio, all of Irish from Welsh or Scottish descent, perform with a combination of instruments including mandolin, banjo, guitar, Great Highland bagpipes, Scottish small-pipes, whistles, spoons and djembe goblet drum. Prepare to have your heartstrings pulled by emotional ballads, to ride the waves with rousing sea chanties and to sing along with rowdy Celtic pub songs.

The streets of Old Sacramento will be filled to bursting with St. Pat's revelers for the annual free parade. Now in its 19th year, more than 1,000 people will be marching on the parade route, which begins at 2nd and L Streets at 1 p.m. Numerous live bands, Irish dancers, bagpipers and representatives of our military, fire and police departments join cultural and charitable organizations and exuberant costumed marchers along the route. The parade is free of charge, and there is ample room for the more than 15,000 visitors that attend the festivities.

No blarney, this will be a high-spirited and boisterous party in honor of St. Patrick's Day. Slugger O'Toole will bring the best of Irish and Celtic music to Harris Center; the seven-person musical powerhouse entertains in full voice and with instrumentation including fiddles, banjo, bodhran drum, button accordion, pennywhistle and mandolin. Performers from Kerry Dance Troupe will entertain with traditional Irish performances.
