Sacramento Restaurant Offering Breakfast Brew

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Beer for breakfast – the latest addition to the menu at a Sacramento restaurant.

It looks like an unlikely pair, but Bike Dog Brewery beer and Insight Coffee are being blended into one.

"What better to go with brunch than some coffee and beer," said A.J. Tendick from Bike Dog Brewery.

The two local companies created the special version of Bike Dog's milk stout for LowBrau in midtown.

"We just sat down and spent a couple hours doing some blending, figuring out what taste we were going for, what the ratios were," Tendick said.

All of the details worked out and it all came down to timing.

"If you add it too early, sometimes the flavors get sucked out through the brewing process. So this is the full potency," Tendick said.

The result is a strong and tasty drink.

"It's much more creamy malty sweet," said Lucky Rodrigues, co-owner of Insight Coffee Roasters.

The coffee is cold brewed through a different kind of process.

"You take the water temperature and you brew for a longer period of time, so our coffees will be used in the beer we brewed at a higher coffee to water ratio than normal at a cooler temperature for about 15 hours," Rodrigues said.

"They knocked it out they delivered us some cold brew coffee and we mixed it into our stout right as we were kegging," Tendick said.

It's an exciting collaboration for the brewery and coffee roaster, who are just down the street from each other.

"I'm a Sacramento native. Our company is here. We roast here right on 8th and S Street we got three locations in the area," Rodrigues said.

Together, they're proving you don't have to wait until happy hour for a cold brew.

"It's something that pairs really well together when it's done right," Rodrigues said.

The milk stout will only be available for a limited time.
