Hidden Cash Returning To Sacramento

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A sensation that swept through California last year is slated to make another return to Sacramento in a couple of weeks.

Hidden Cash tweeted out there will be a special event coming on the evening of Aug. 21. Details are sparse.

In June 2014, the craze came to the capital city with clues that started rolling on CBS13 and Good Day Sacramento. It was a frenzy in Sacramento as people from all over the region were following clues pointing to white envelopes with cash inside. Four college students who found some of the hidden money used to buy breakfast for the homeless.

The idea is the brainchild of Bay Area native and Sacramento State graduate Jason Buzi. He had just sold a big piece of real estate and wanted to give back some of his newfound fortune.

"I said let's do something, and came up with the idea of hiding some money around and let's put it on a website and we will give out clues," he said.

But the event wasn't without controversy.

Overzealous money hunters in Whittier trampled through Penn Park in search of free money, causing damage to the park, including uprooting a newly planted tree, tearing apart sprinkler heads and breaking fences.

Buzi agreed to send the city $5,000 to cover the cost of repairs.

The group says it's working with the city of Sacramento for the Aug. 21 event to make sure things stay in a spirit of fun, cooperation and camaraderie.
