SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The man suspected of shooting a deputy in the face earlier this week appeared in a courtroom today.

Nicory Marquis Spann appeared handcuffs and wearing a jail jumpsuit when he appeared before a judge. He was appointed a public defender.

Spann’s next court date is scheduled for July 21.

Spann is accused of shooting Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Alex Ladwig in the face at the Regional Transit station in North Highlands on Tuesday night. The incident stemmed from a fight between the two, say police. Spann was somehow reportedly able to wrestle away Ladwig’s gun and shoot Ladwig.

More than 100 officers from multiple agencies assisted in the search for Spann as surrounding businesses were evacuated. He was eventually found curled up in a hallway of a Red Roof Inn, according to said Sgt. Tony Turnbull, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Dept.

Ladwig is said to be in good spirits and responsive. He is scheduled to undergo another surgery. His recovery could take some time, but his family says they’ll be there every step of the way, according to a statement from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.
