Compassion Planet Helps Foster Children Who Age Out Of Program

ROCKLIN (CBS13) — After the age of 18, life can be tough for foster children who don't always have a lot of family support.

Adam Reed is beating the statistics as a computer science major at Sierra College. More than half of aged-out foster kids don't have a place to live, and less than 5 percent attend college.

"A lot of the time, they end up homeless," he said.

He's working with Compassion Planet, a nonprofit helping foster youth who have aged-out achieve their goals.

"We are trying to bring some stability into their lives," said executive director Scott Flanagan.

Deer Creek Farm Boutique helps by not only providing jobs, but also revenue. It's owned by Compassion Planet and run with the help of volunteers.

"I really love the work, and the hard work has been giving me a lot of exercise, too," Reed said.

In addition to help with a job, food and housing, Compassion Planet puts 20 to 30 mentors in their lives and helps build a network of encouragement similar to a family.

"Our greatest outcome or win would be 20 to 30 years later just being productive, thriving in their life," Flanagan said.

Even though Reed has a long road ahead to reach his dreams, Compassion Planet is helping him every step of the way.
